Glory Days
Here’s the story on how I ended up pitching batting practice for the Orioles in 1980.
That year, there was a lengthy strike that started about a month into the season. The players were locked out of the stadiums and the entire season stopped. It went on for about 60 days. During that time..
I was contacted by the Orioles to pitch in a game between their top prospects and an all star semi-pro team as the scouts wanted to see players in action. The game happened to be held on the day the strike ended.
I pitched 3 innings and struck out all 9 batters. I had a nasty curve and my fastball was clocked at about 96mph. I was compared to Ron Guidry, at least thats what they were telling me.. Cool!
At the end of the game, the scout invited all the pitchers from the game to come to the stadium the next day because they wanted to see us again and evaluate us.
I went to the stadium and pitched batting practice to a bunch of players, but one in particular wanted me to bring it to him and see what I could do. I struck him out 3 times in a row. He couldnt hit me. That happened to be Eddie Murray, who is now a hall of famer. After I was finished pitching, I hung around and shagged balls in the outfield with Jim Palmer and other players. It was a ton of fun! These were guys I totally idolized..
Anyway.. at the end, the scouts thanked us for coming and said they would be in touch. Well.. you guys know me and know I’m a bit… forward:) The next day, I came back to the stadium and went to the locker room. There was an old guy who guarded the locker room so yahoos couldn’t get in. He asked me what I wanted, and I said.. I was here yesterday and came back to pitch BP again..
He said.. well.. I don’t know anything about that and wouldn’t let me in. Just then, Cal Ripken Sr, who was the 3rd Base coach walked up to me and said.. aren’t you that lefty who threw yesterday and Eddie couldn’t hit? Yes sir.. that was I.. Well.. come on in! We want you to keep coming and keep throwing BP.. you always throw strikes and you challenge the hitters, we like that!
So.. thats how it happened. Cal gave me a uniform, a locker, 4 free tickets to every home game and I could hang in the dugout during games.. Well. I was in heaven! I did it for the rest of the season and had a total blast. I got to see things in the locker room that many never see..
One thing I recall was one of the players had a birthday party in the locker room and someone made him a cake.. All the lockers and floor was covered in plastic sheeting. I didnt know why.. I soon found out.. The player started smashing the cake with a bat and the cake flew everywhere! It was so much fun to see these grown men acting like kids.
What I learned from that summer was this..
If you want something to happen in your life… MAKE it happen.
Go above and beyond and don’t worry about the rest.
Perfect practice makes perfect.
Be extremely grateful for everything.
Practice humility.
Be bold in your talents.
Go for it and don’t be afraid of failing or succeeding.
Have FUN!
I didnt get drafted by the O’s.. and soon after I hurt my arm and had to give up my aspirations of being a pro ball player.. But I still played ball and enjoyed the game for years. It was after my ball playing days were over that I turned to music and playing in bands full time.
So there ya go.. the story of the skinny kid who had the thrill of a lifetime. God throws ya a bone every now and then.
let’s be independent… together!
